Service: Building Skills & Creating Change

Defining Service

Service is dedicating time, energy, and talents to promoting the welfare of communities and individuals in need. Engaging directly with people to understand their challenges, provide support, and work collaboratively towards solutions allows me to help empower others while fulfilling my sense of purpose. Gaining service experience is crucial for developing empathy, teamwork, communication, and adaptability skills. Participation in service immerses individuals in diverse environments, challenging them to assess needs, integrate into new contexts, and apply strengths to make meaningful contributions. My service experiences at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and with the Coastal Bend community through the Honors Program ignited my passion for driving positive change and equipped me with the skills to turn that passion into impact.

Serving at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

My experience at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank taught me that serving others is not about grand gestures or single-handedly solving complex issues – it is about being present, actively listening, and responding to individual needs with compassion. When I first arrived for my volunteer shift, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. As someone who had volunteered at smaller food banks in the past, I was curious to see how a larger organization in a major city like LA approached serving food-insecure families. However, I also felt somewhat out of place and unsure of how to connect with the clients.

Despite being a brief, one-time experience, volunteering at the Food Bank left a lasting impression on me. The initial discomfort quickly faded thanks to the kindness of one particular man. His warm smile and friendly demeanor put me at ease, and I found myself engaging in genuine conversation with him as I assisted with food distribution. This interaction set the tone for the rest of my shift, reminding me of the power of simple human connection.

Leading and serving is about showing up consistently, meeting people where they are, and doing what you can to empower them in that moment. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to a leadership style rooted in empathy and adaptability, recognizing that the most meaningful change often happens through the accumulation of intentional, people-centered actions. I left the Food Bank with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the power of hands-on service.

Revitalizing the Coastal Bend Community with the Honors Program

While at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, I had the privilege of engaging in extensive community service through the Honors Program where I learned a multifaceted approach to community development. Our activities centered around revitalizing the Coastal Bend region, allowing me to directly contribute to the well-being of my local community. Working with faith-based organizations and humanitarian programs taught me the value of asking people what they need before assuming. This approach ensured that our efforts were truly aligned with the community's needs and desires, fostering a sense of empowerment and ownership among residents.

Wading through the trash at Whitecap Beach after a tropical storm hit the Gulf Coast during my first semester in Corpus Christi ignited my passion for environmental stewardship. I participated in six beach clean-ups – one each semester – alongside other Honors Program volunteers. Like many members of the community, my commitment extended beyond organized events. I actively contributed to the revitalization of the beaches by bringing trash bags and picking up litter during my early morning walks. These solitary moments of service reinforced the importance of individual actions in creating collective change.

Through my involvement with various community organizations and initiatives, I gained a deeper understanding of the diverse challenges faced by individuals and families in the Coastal Bend region. From witnessing the realities of food insecurity to engaging with young students passionate about science, these experiences exposed me to a range of issues and reinforced my belief in the importance of approaching service with empathy and respect. Consistently engaging in service through the Honors Program strengthened my commitment to community development – one that recognizes the interconnectedness of social, educational, and economic factors in shaping the well-being of individuals and communities alike.
